What is an ex-dividend date?

The ex-dividend date is the first trading day on which a stock trades without entitlement to the next declared dividend. To receive the upcoming payment you must be a shareholder of record at the close of the previous trading day, which means buying the stock at least one trading day before the ex-dividend date.

Why does the stock price drop on the ex-dividend date?

All else equal, a stock typically opens lower by roughly the dividend amount on its ex-dividend date because new buyers no longer get the next payment. The drop usually narrows during the trading day as normal market forces take over.

Should I buy a stock just to capture its dividend?

"Dividend capture" — buying right before the ex-date and selling right after — rarely works in practice. The price drop on the ex-date typically offsets the dividend received, and you may incur taxes and trading costs. Long-term ownership of high-quality dividend stocks tends to be a more reliable strategy.

What's the difference between the ex-dividend date and the payment date?

The ex-dividend date is the cutoff for eligibility; the payment date is the day the cash actually arrives in your brokerage account. The gap is usually two to six weeks. The payment date for each stock is shown on its individual dividend page.

How accurate are these dates?

How this list is built

We pull the next ex-dividend date for each company from official corporate announcements through our data feed and refresh it every time the data refreshes — daily at the time stamped above. Stocks appear on this page only when their next ex-dividend date is in the future and within the next 30 calendar days. Once a date passes, the stock drops off this view until the company announces its next one. The Safety Score column gives you an instant read on whether a high yield is likely to keep being paid. Yields shown are forward yields based on the most recent annual payment and the latest stock price, so they update with the market. Frequencies (quarterly, semi-annual, monthly, annual) reflect each company's stated policy.
