Safest Dividend Stocks
The 50 most reliable dividend payers in our coverage, ranked by Dividend Safety Score.
Last updated: May 9, 2026
Income investors don't just need yield — they need a dividend they can count on through recessions, rate cycles, and earnings disappointments. The Dividend Safety Score we built combines payout coverage, balance-sheet strength, profitability, and the company's track record of paying and growing the dividend into a single 0-to-100 number. This page ranks the top 50 stocks across our coverage of 1,100+ companies by that score. Every stock here clears at least the "Safe" tier on the underlying methodology, and most reach "Very Safe". Use it as a starting point for building a high-quality dividend portfolio, then click through to read each company's detailed safety report.

How we rank the safest dividend stocks
Our score is computed for every dividend-paying stock we cover and updated daily. Four weighted categories drive the result. Payout & Coverage (30%) — earnings payout, free cash flow payout, operating cash flow payout, and interest coverage — measures whether the dividend is genuinely affordable today. Balance Sheet (20%) tracks net debt, current ratio, and debt-to-equity, with sector-specific thresholds so REITs and utilities aren't unfairly penalized for normal industry leverage. Profitability (20%) scores return on equity, operating margin, gross margin, and the stability of net margins over time. Dividend Track Record (30%) rewards long, uninterrupted streaks of payments and penalizes any history of cuts — a confirmed dividend cut caps the maximum overall score at 59 (Caution) regardless of how strong the other categories look. The top of this leaderboard is dominated by Dividend Aristocrats and Champions, but it isn't a pure aristocrat list: several non-aristocrat names earn very high scores because their fundamentals are exceptional even when their public dividend history is shorter.
